Smile Isle Orthodontics is the only airway-focused orthodontic office in the area. Dr. Marina Kosturos and Dr. Rick Escobar are both board-certified orthodontists and Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, and airway-focused orthodontic care is one of their areas of expertise. Between them, they have treated more than 200 airway cases.
Dr. Marina completed her orthodontic residency at the University of Colorado after earning her DDS from the University of the Pacific, where she graduated in the top 5% of her class. She is highly trained in the growth and development of the jaws and face in children and adolescents, which is the window when airway-focused treatment can guide how the jaw develops.
Dr. Rick earned his DMD from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, graduating in the top 5% of his class, and completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Colorado, earning a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry. He grew up in Tampa and came home to build Smile Isle with Dr. Marina.
Your first visit is a free consultation. Instead of looking only at crooked teeth, the doctors look at how your child breathes, sleeps, and grows, because a narrow jaw or crowded airway can affect all three.
Smile Isle is one of the only offices in the area with 3D CBCT and advanced airway imaging. A standard X-ray shows the teeth; 3D imaging shows the jaw and airway structures behind them, so the diagnosis is based on what is actually there.
The team uses iTero digital scans instead of impressions. Comfort options like a comfort menu, soft weighted blankets, and noise-canceling headphones are there for kids who are nervous or sensitive to sensory input.
The doctors walk you through what they see and what it means for breathing, sleep, jaw growth, and function. If treatment is recommended, it may include expansion to widen a narrow upper jaw or early (Phase I) treatment. When needed, they work alongside ENTs or myofunctional therapists.

Dr. Marina and Dr. Rick have been absolutely wonderful!! We researched a lot of orthodontists for our daughter and could not be happier with Smile Isle! They spent time really getting to know my daughter and worked out a treatment plan that was specifically designed just for her while taking into consideration her concerns. This made her feel so much more comfortable and confident. As a parent, I could not ask for more! Since starting our treatment plan we have attended two follow up appointments and each visit is amazing! We had such an amazing experience with Dr. Marina at Smile Isle Orthodontics! We went in today for a free consultation for all three of my children, and we were blown away by the entire experience from start to finish.
The office is absolutely beautiful, spotless, and feels brand new. They have all of the latest technology and newest equipment, and I was especially impressed with how comprehensive their evaluation was. All three of my children received free airway exams and 3-D imaging of their mouths, which gave us so much insight into their individual orthodontic and airway needs.
What really stood out to me was how much time Dr. Marina spent with our family. She was incredibly kind, patient, and thorough and answered every single one of my questions without ever making us feel rushed.
